How to Be the Ripest Candidate of a Great Bunch

How to Be the Ripest Candidate of a Great Bunch Youve been through  round after round of interviews.  Youve watched the  bung fruits be weeded out, and youve managed to hold on until the end. Youve been requested in for one final interview; the  feedback  thus far has been great, but you also know youre one of a few finalists vying for the same role. Ugh. Youve been hearing lately that its a candidate-driven market, that the world is your oyster, so you didnt think it was going to come to this. After all, youre perfect for the role and know your stuff inside out, right? Well yes, but the thing is, youre up against X, Y and Z who are also perfect for the role and also know their stuff. So, how can you smash the final stage  and make sure youre the freshest pick? Showcase your longterm ambition Its time to think big and long. Sure, you might be the perfect person for the job now, but how are we looking for one, two, three years down the track?  Losing employees is a huge cost to companies, as is hiring new replacements. It is in a companys best financial interests to have people stay with them for longer, so you must  make it your mission to sell yourself as a longterm investment. If youre speaking directly with your potential new line manager, you want them to have confidence that, if you are successful in bagging the role, all the time they spend with you, coaching, teaching and supporting you, wont be in vain. Asking questions about internal career growth and development opportunities will show the business youre in for the long haul, unlike your shortsighted competitors. Go above and beyond on the effort front This is where you want to surprise your interviewer with your commitment and dedication to scoring the job. It goes without saying youd dress to impress, but Im talking about thinking outside of the box. Is there a way you can create an example of the  value youd offer the business? If youre going for a marketing job, can you create a mini mock campaign, tailored to the position you want? If you are going for a research or analysis type of role, can you put together some stats to show them what youre capable of achieving? Putting in an extra hour or two of preparation might require a lot more time and effort than youd care to invest, but if it means you get your dream role, doesnt that make it worth it? Find some common ground Im not in any way suggesting you conduct creepy research into your interviewer / hiring managers personal life, but certainly, try to find some interesting things out about their interests or personality, whether you do it by glancing at their social profiles, or coming straight out and asking them. If youve met them a number of times, the likelihood is they believe youre a great fit skill-wise for the role why else would they waste their time with you? Its fair to assume they are now looking for what type of colleague youll make, and what youre like as a person, sizing you up against the others. Finding some non work-related talking points will allow you to connect on a more human level, and let them picture you as someone they get along with and could see themselves managing or working with. Arm yourself with proof At one stage or another, if youre successful, your new employer will want to conduct some reference checks. This will be part of the process whether you like it or not, and more often than not, will be done by HR to confirm youre  not a serial  psychopath  and have simply done all the things you said you have.  Think of recommendations as a valuable marketing tool, to convince your interviewer youre the one they need. Try to gather as much reference material as you can prior to your final conversation; form  testimonials to  employer  reviews and recommendations. Being able to talk about this, and provide evidence of if need be, will help fill your hiring manager that youre a safe choice; a proven success story. Be grateful and upfront Lets talk about the follow up email or note. Im a big fan. Youve just met or spoken with a very important decision maker. While you might have a very clear memory of how the conversation went and the points you got across, you cant be sure they have taken those same impressions away. Why? If theyre interviewing a couple of other people, asking them the same questions over and over, your answers are likely to get muddled up with theirs.  Thanking the person later for the time they spent with you is a really professional, polite thing to do, and also an opportunity to briefly recap the most important messages. If you are 100% sure you are the right person for this role, tell them leave nothing on the table. Personalise this message, and be upfront. After all, it might just be the one thing that pushes you over the finishing line first.

15 Smoking Hot Ways to Use LinkedIn for Job Search

15 Smoking Hot Ways to Use LinkedIn for Job Search LinkedIn is a game changer for job seekers as well. It can put the power back into the hands of candidates and out of the hands of recruitment consultants. There are plenty of ways you can be proactive, rather than reactive in your job search. Here are my 15 top LinkedIn job hunting tips, in no particular order. There is no point being half-hearted. This point is my big bandwagon point for Australian professionals and job seekers. Connect with people. Look up people from your past and find out where they work now. Use the connect email to invite people for coffee and find out what they are up to. Show some interest in them, and what you are looking for, job wise, will inevitably come up. Find a role model networker who is working in your desired area. Look to see which groups they belong to and join those. Start a group around your area of interest and expertise. Invite people who can add value to join. Welcome them to the group and ask them a question directly. You can build up your knowledge of their organisation, any problems they may be facing, and approach them with a solution in mind (you). Look to see who has viewed your profile, and add them to your network. If they are recruiters, see if they have jobs   coming up in your area. As a carrot to see you, mention that you may have useful contacts for them. Look to see where people with your background are working and what their responsibilities are. That way if you want to approach a company directly about jobs, you are making an informed and targeted approach. Invite people out for coffee to find out what they do. This is a good tactic if you want to change careers. You can find out the good, bad and ugly about their jobs, and whether that might be an area of interest for you. Add value to your network. Be known as someone helpful. You often have to build trust with people before you can ask them for favours. If you see someone asking a question, then answer it. Be proactive and send them an email with a link. Update your status with recent information of use to your network. You’ll give people a reason to contact you if you do that. Link your LinkedIn profile to your personal emails to  make it easy for people to connect with you. Put your LinkedIn link to your Facebook profile. I have seen jobs come through friends, and Facebook is one place people tell their friends if they’re looking for staff. You want to make it easy for people to check you out. Go along to social events that are organized via LinkedIn. There is only so much you can achieve online. Trust is better built face to face. Ask a connection for an introduction. That’s kind of one of the big points of LinkedIn. Find out what a job really requires. Job advertisements often have a lot of woolly wording. If you can, find a company insider to give you the insight into what the company is about, or even what the job requires. They may even pass on your resume, and save the company a recruitment fee. Your turn! Let us know what your best LinkedIn tip is in the comment section below. Related: Why Facebook Sucks for Job Search.

5 beauty careers that you may not have considered - Debut

5 beauty careers that you may not have considered - Debut This post was written by an external contributor.  Chinyere Ogwe has researched some of the top beauty careers that you should take a look at.   When it comes to career planning as a university student or graduate, it helps to have an idea of what you’d like to do as a future job and/or what industry you’d like to work in. One of the most thriving sectors you might be thinking of entering is the beauty industry. Estimated to be worth over billions of dollars, it’s a sector that’s continuing to boom and is full of domestic and international opportunities. There are plenty of beauty brands that offer opportunities, including one of Debuts top employers,  L’Oreal. Some people think that the common job routes in beauty include becoming a makeup artist or a beauty sales consultant. While there’s nothing wrong with these roles which don’t require a specific degree there are other job options available that you can bear in mind Beauty copywriter If you love both beauty and writing, then why not work in a job that combines the two? Beauty copywriters specialises in writing ‘copy’ e.g. blog posts, articles, reports, product descriptions, web content, etc for marketing and advertising purposes. For example; if you work as a beauty copywriter for a skincare brand, you might spend your time writing blog posts and product descriptions to convince the consumer to buy the products and generate sales. Even though copywriting is a marketing role, it’s not ‘sales-y’ in the traditional sense. It’s all about promoting the product or service in a subtle way. You could end up working for an agency where you’ll be dealing with different clients or working in-house working for one client. Alternatively, you could work on a freelance or remote basis. Copywriting doesn’t require a specific degree. But any of the following may help get you ahead; Marketing, Advertising, Journalism, English or other creative or humanities subjects. If you’re searching for beauty copywriting roles then it helps to have an enthusiasm for the industry. You’ll need to be able to keep up to date with the latest trends and have a high level of brand awareness. The starting salary for a beauty copywriter is around £20,000 per year. Cosmetic scientist If you’ve studied your degree programme in a scientific subject such as Biochemistry, Biology, Pharmacy, Pharmacology or Chemistry then working as a cosmetic scientist could be the job role for you. It’s a job that combines science and creativity! A cosmetic scientist develops the formulas for upcoming beauty products, as well as researching ingredients and testing suitable concoctions. If youre starting out in this role, you can earn around £20,000 per year. Once youve got a bit more experience, a senior cosmetic scientist can earn around £50,000 per year or more. Digital beauty journalist Even though many magazines are shutting down as a result of the new media age, digital media is thriving, so there are plenty of opportunities available in this field. So, if you’ve always wanted to be a journalist, then theres hope after all. As a digital beauty journalist, you’ll spend your hours writing beauty articles on all the latest trends, as well as writing exclusive stores and features. You’ll have to keep up and be in the know extensive beauty knowledge is required. The job will involve writing pieces that are optimised for the internet, mobile and applications, as most readers will consume the media in this way, so it helps to have some knowledge around SEO and readability. You’ll also have to liaise with editors, PRs and brands over pitches, content and commissions. You don’t have to have studied journalism to get into the field. However, creative or humanities subjects such as English, Politics and History will help improve your flair for writing. Also, getting plenty of experience in journalism and editorial is much more likely to help you get your foot in the door. Starting out, a digital journalist can expect to earn between £19,000 and £21,000 per year. Experienced digital journalists can earn between £30,000 and £50,000 per year. If you become an editor, then you can expect to earn around this range or even more. Scent coordinator If you love fragrances, then look into becoming a scent coordinator. This role specialises in the arrangement of scents through products like candles, reed diffusers and mists. They then match these scents to be the perfect fit for settings and occasions, such as weddings, fashion shows, parties, hotels and shops. There are variations of this role with different titles, such as beauty buyer (for a fragrance brand or department), fragrance account manager and fragrance sales consultant. Salaries for these roles vary. It helps if you have an artistic flair or an interest in chemistry. However if youre serious about becoming a scent coordinator, youll need to complete an accredited training course. Cosmetic product stylist If you love photography and you love creating beautiful flat lays, then guess what? You can turn that into a viable career. As a cosmetic product stylist, you will have to set up beauty items (the ‘props’) in a decorative way to bring them to life. You will then photograph these props for branding and promotional purposes. It’s fun, but you may have to deal with mess such as mascara smudges and foundation splashes. Once again, you don’t need a specific degree but being artistic and creative helps. If you’ve got a degree or qualification in photography, then that will certainly work to your advantage. Wed Rather Die Than Be Divided - Kathy Caprino

Wed Rather Die Than Be Divided This past Wednesday, I attended a very powerful and moving event in Greenwich, CT, hosted by 85 broads.   It was an inspiring forum and gathering of trailblazing women, all of whom want to make a difference no matter how small or large in the world around them.     Whether theyre impacting law, finance, politics, technology, corporate policy, fashion, or non-profit, each attendee has a dream to not only succeed abundantly, but also help other women and impact the world in the process.     Marie Wilson President and Founder of The White House Project was the featured speaker, and my God, what a powerful individual, womens advocate ,  and speaker she is.   She shared many riveting stories and  vital information about the state of women in political leadership today, and how sorely lacking the U.S. is in representation of women in leadership.     The story that touched me most deeply, however,  was about a group of young girls, 12 years of age or so, in Rwanda.   Marie tells of these girls who were gathered together in  their classroom in school, when suddenly insurgents crashed into their classroom with guns flying, and demanded that the girls divide themselves (ostensibly for the purpose of selecting who would be killed and who spared).     The girls sat completely motionless, saying nothing.   The  gunman screamed again, DIVIDE YOURSELVES!   Again the girls did not move or speak.   After a few long moments, one lone little girl replied, We would rather die than divide ourselves.   The moment I heard this story, I realized something  that shook me.    We in this country divide ourselves constantly we make others wrong, we judge and criticize, and put ourselves above others (or beneath them), we distance ourselves and create walls  around us as a constant practice.   What is needed most today among women and among all human beings is connection, community and commitment.   Connection so that we can feel more for each others experiences, and can demonstrate compassion, empathy and validation.   Community   because we can do so much more together than we can do alone, and being together uplifts us.   And finally commitment.   It doesnt matter what you want in life what matters is what youre truly committed to creating.   We would rather die than be divided.   Thats a principle that I am now committed to living by.   Thank you, Marie Wilson, and Janet Hanson of 85 Broads for reminding us that community, connection, and commitment  changes the world.   What are you committed to creating in your life, and where can you find connection and community to support you?
